IKJEFT01
The program that runs TSO in a batch job, so TSO commands and REXX execs can run without a terminal.
Also written batch TSO, SYSTSIN, SYSTSPRT, IKJEFT1B, IKJEFT1A, IRXJCL
IKJEFT01 is TSO's terminal monitor program, the program that reads and runs TSO commands. Running it in a job step with EXEC PGM=IKJEFT01 gives you TSO in batch, with no terminal.
Commands are read from the SYSTSIN DD statement, often as instream data, and their output is written to SYSTSPRT. Anything you can type at the TSO READY prompt can usually be run this way: TSO commands, REXX execs and CLISTs.
It is also the common way to run DB2 programs in batch. The DSN command, followed by RUN PROGRAM(...), runs a program attached to a DB2 subsystem.
There are two variants. IKJEFT1A and IKJEFT1B behave differently from IKJEFT01 when commands fail, passing the return code back to the job step, or ending the step, so that later steps can react. Which one a site uses for DB2 programs is usually set in its standards. For a REXX exec that does not need TSO commands, the program IRXJCL is a lighter alternative.
Where can I learn this hands-on?
Right here, at ZedBank. You take a junior job at a simulated bank and learn each part of the work by doing it, with Zed beside you. There's nothing to install.
